The world regrets the great loss of one of the most influential figures in the field of science; the British scientist Stephen Hawking died on march 14, 2018 at his home in Cambridge in England at 76 years of age.

Hawking will go down in history for his work on black holes and for unifying the two famous theories of twentieth-century physics: that of relativity as well as that of quantum mechanics. The flag of Gonville and Caius college in Cambridge, of which hawking was a student and then a teacher, flies this Wednesday at half mast.

His three children, Lucy, Robert and time expressed their sadness in a statement: he was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will survive for many years. They added that their courage, persistence and sense of humor inspired people from all over the world. One of his most famous phrases expresses his way of facing life:? The universe would not be great if it were not home to the people you love ?

A whole life explaining the universe

Stephen Hawking was born on january 8, 1942 and was recognized as a theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, cosmologist and scientific.

His most famous scientific discovery was hawking radiation , a phenomenon in which black holes are predicted to release energy until they disappear. He is also known for proposing the theory of the singularity of space, time along with Roger Penrose, the two physicists, applied the logic of black holes to the entire universe.

Stephen Hawking is a mediocre student in his youth, but his brilliance was recognized by his peers who nicknamed him  Einstein  for his ability to understand science. He enrolled in mathematics along with physics at the university of Oxford in 1959.

When asked the origin of the universe, cosmology captured his interest and dedicated to this subject his postgraduate studies at the university of Cambridge. In 1963 he was diagnosed with a strange motoneuronal disease related to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (als), with only 22 years of age. With the passage of time, she was paralyzed and therefore spent most of her life in a wheelchair; years later he would lose the ability to speak, but with the help of a voice synthesizer he managed to communicate.

During his postgraduate studies the symptoms of his illness, which he had already detected in Oxford, began to worsen, including difficulty speaking and tying shoelaces.

In 1965 she married jane wilde and her three children were born, after 25 years she ended her marriage and remarried in 1995 with elaine mason , one of her nurses, whose previous husband had created her voice synthesizer.

He was appointed to the royal society of London in 1974, received 12 honorary doctorates and was awarded the order of the British empire, cbe degree in 1982; he also won several prizes, including the prince of Asturias Concordia in 1989 and the special prize for fundamental physics in 2012, endowed with twice as much research resources as the Nobel prize in physics .

The historian of time

In his scientific dissemination works he discusses his own theories and cosmology in general. As he himself said:? The universe not only has a history, but any possible history?

Among his most famous works are a brief history of time, beginning the big bang to black holes (1988) and is the best-selling science book in history; brief history of time (2005) in which he tried to make clear the history of the earth as simply as possible.

In 2014, hawking presented an article that generated controversy entitled conservation of information and weather prediction for black holes that was published on the website arxiv, Cornell university in which he denies the reality of black holes, being that he he himself dedicated many of his research to these regions in space.

Stephen Hawking, a scientific celebrity

The first wife of the scientist, jane wilde published an autobiography about his life with hawking in 1999 called music to move the stars, a life with stephen , the author and ex-wife of the scientist continued his memories with the book towards the infinity , which was adapted to the cinema in 2014 in the film the theory of everything .

Stephen Hawking’s great sense of humor led him to become a prominent figure in popular culture; in 2012 h awking appeared in the series the big bang theory and the animated show the simpsons created a character in his honor .

He will always be remembered for his contributions to science, but above all for reminding us that we must investigate, be curious and receptive to everything that surrounds us.

My goal is simple. It is a complete knowledge of the universe, why it is how it is and why it exists.
