Beijing goes underground

BeijingThe terrible environmental problem of Beijing lies underground: sinking metropolis. Excessive pumping of groundwater causes the ground beneath the city to collapse, according to a new study. Scientists have studied satellite images, which show that Beijing, and in particular the central business district of the capital, sags every year by 11 cm.

The study warns that subsidence is a threat to the security of the city with a population of over 20 million people, and it can also disrupt the movement of trains.

Beijing is on the dry plains, where the water piling up over the millennia. Due to the drilling of wells and water intake the groundwater level drops, and the underlying soil is compressed like a dry sponge.

Sinks the whole city, but most of all subsidence expressed in Chaoyang District, the business center of the capital. Since the 1990s. in Chaoyang built numerous skyscrapers, ring roads and other infrastructure. In Beijing and around tens of thousands of drilled wells, which are used for farming and gardening?

In 2015, China launched an engineering project, whose purpose – to solve the water crisis in Beijing. The government completed the construction of the South-North Water Transfer Project – a network of canals and tunnels, 2,400 km in length, by which the capital will receive 44.8 billion cubic meters of water per year.

Previously, Beijing has reduced pumping of groundwater. In January 2015, Chaoyang District announced plans to close 367 water wells that will reduce pumping of groundwater by 10 million cubic meters. Beijing is not alone in its problem. Mexico deposited on 28 cm per year, with the same speed sinks Jakarta. Bangkok is lowered to 12 cm per year, slightly ahead of Beijing.
