The oceans of Earth’s history

Global warmingScientists are concerned about the new discovery. It turns out that about five million years ago, a huge East Antarctic ice sheet melted, raising the sea level by 20 meters. What will happen if the current increase in global temperature will lead to the same consequences?

About five million years ago, sheets of ice at the South Pole began to melt because of ancient global warming. This has caused a rise in sea level by 20 meters. Scientists came to the conclusion that most of this increase was caused by the melting of a large ice sheet in East Antarctica.

The mysterious pause in global warming

Natural WarmingThe British National Meteorological Centre presented at the conference, held in London’s Science Media Center some of their assumptions about why such a dangerous global warming has stopped.

Scientists have noticed that compared to the 1990s the average temperature on the planet has fallen somewhat, despite the growing amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. According to meteorologists, in the period between 1998 and 2012 the temperature increased only by 0.04 degrees Celsius, while in the previous two periods (1970 to 1998), the temperature increased by 0.17% over ten years. There was a slight pause in global warming, but climate scientists believe that it is long.

The Martian surface Ocean

The researchers found more evidence to support the theory that several billion years ago, most of the Martian surface was covered by a vast ocean.

New data showed on pictures that made Mars reconnaissance satellite NASA launched from the spaceport at Cape Canaveral August 12, 2005. In the photos, apparently, you can see the ancient delta of the river, a tributary of the vast ocean that covered a third of the surface of the Red Planet. According to a study co-author Mike Lamb, Assistant Professor of Geology at Caltech in Pasadena, the assumption is that in the northern lowlands of Mars are dried-up ocean bottom, put forward long ago, but still have not found any real evidence. The mystery of the origin of gold in the Universe

GoldThe gold in the cosmos could be shaped by the collision of neutron stars, scientists believe. Origin of gold remained unclear until the end, because, in contrast to the lighter fundamentals such as carbon and iron, it can not be formed directly inside the star. Edo Berger of the Smithsonian Astrophysical center seems to solve this mystery, watching gamma-ray bursts – the cosmic scale releases of radioactive energy. Berger and his colleagues studied the short gamma-ray burst GRB 130603B, caused by the collision of two neutron stars. He was seen by NASA spacecraft Swift and lasted less than two-tenths of a second. Read the rest of this entry »

Troyan sky satellite – a celestial body that moves along the orbit of the planet, the satellite behind it by 60 degrees. 150 images of Neptune in 2004 and 2009, there is a tiny dot. Mark Showalter, an astronomer who discovered satellite, said that it is hundreds of millions of times smaller than the tiniest star that can be seen with the naked eye. According to the emission of light in the satellite 100 million times darker than most inconspicuous star. Read the rest of this entry »
